What the job involves

Painting is mostly preparation. Nail holes and dings get filled, gaps at trim and baseboards get caulked, glossy or patched areas get sanded, and anything that is not being painted gets covered or taped. A room that is prepped well paints quickly and looks right afterward. A room that is not will show every skipped step once the light hits it.

Furniture is moved to the middle and covered, floors are protected, and the room is put back and cleaned up at the end. Two coats is standard on a color change, and we will tell you up front if what you have chosen is going to need three.

Common situations

  • Repainting a room or two before moving in or listing the house
  • Covering a dark or bold color with something neutral
  • Flat builder-grade walls that mark up and cannot be wiped clean
  • Trim, baseboards, and doors that have yellowed or chipped
  • Ceilings that have gone dull or have water staining
  • Touching up after drywall repair or a contractor's work
  • An accent wall in a bedroom, dining room, or office

Who buys the paint

Most customers buy their own, and that is usually the cheaper way to do it — you pick the brand and sheen you want and keep whatever is left for touch-ups later. If you would rather we pick it up, we will tell you the cost before buying and add it to the invoice rather than marking it up quietly.

What affects pricing

Number of rooms, wall height, how much patching the walls need first, whether ceilings and trim are included, and how big a color change it is. Going from dark to light is more work than light to light, because it takes an extra coat. We price by the room, not by guesswork, once we have seen photos.

How it works

Four steps, start to finish

01

Send photos of each room

One photo from each corner tells us wall height, trim, how much patching is needed, and what color we are covering.

02

Get a price per room

Priced room by room so you can decide what to include and what to leave for later.

03

Prep day

Furniture moved and covered, floors protected, holes filled, gaps caulked, surfaces sanded and taped.

04

Paint, then put the room back

Two coats as standard. Tape pulled, furniture returned, floors cleared, and the leftover paint labeled and left with you.

Houston humidity slows drying. On a humid week the second coat sometimes waits until the following morning rather than being rushed on top of a coat that is not ready.

Questions

Painting questions

Do I need to buy the paint?

Most customers do, and it usually works out cheaper — you choose the brand and sheen and keep the leftovers for touch-ups. If you would rather we buy it, we tell you the cost first and add it to the invoice at what it cost.

How many coats will my walls need?

Two is standard for a color change. Dark to light sometimes needs three, and we will say so before starting rather than halfway through. Covering a strong red, navy, or deep green almost always needs a primer coat first.

Can you match a color I already have?

Yes. The easiest way is a leftover can with the formula on the lid. If there is none, a paint store can scan a chip cut from an out-of-sight spot and get very close, though a scanned match is never quite perfect on a wall that has faded.

Do you move the furniture?

We move it to the center of the room and cover it. Anything especially heavy, fragile, or valuable we would rather you move or point out beforehand.

How long does a room take?

A standard bedroom with walls only is usually a day including prep. Add ceilings, trim, and doors and it grows. Several rooms at once is more efficient than doing them one at a time on separate visits.

Can you paint over wallpaper?

Sometimes, but we would rather not. Paint seals moisture against the adhesive and the paper can bubble or peel later, taking the paint with it. Removing it first costs more up front and is the only way to get a result that lasts.
